I wanted to reach out to everyone in our little Moonlit Acres family and let you know that we've made the switch to a holistic dog food. In the canine world cancer is a very big concern. One of the leading causes of cancer in both humans and dogs is GMOs and the quality of food being consumed.
For those of you who have been with us for years we use to feed Life's Abundance. However, during COVID they changed their formula and we haven't been happy with it at all since the modifications to the formula. We had a huge issue with receiving moldy food, dogs getting sick and dogs blowing coats. We made the switch to ProPlan. I really like ProPlan but the GMOs, soy and fillers are concerning. Not to mention the chicken bi-products in the none poultry formulas. I have a picky eater in the house now so this is one of the reasons for us looking once again into new food. All of our dogs living with us have made the switch to Pawtree! We feel this is a great product and wanted to share it with all our MLA families. Pawtree provides a nutritionally dense food with ZERO GMO's and or fillers. And for the dogs who are sensitive to chicken there is ZERO chicken & or bi-products in the non poultry formulas.
Spending a little bit more on quality dog food will HOPEFULLY help minimize the amount you will pay in overall vet bills. I know our vet who is just a little farm vet has passed along some significant price increases over the last year. It's making me think twice about going to the vet. One unexpected avoidable vet bill could cover the difference in cost of food for the entire year.
GMOs are known to increase cancer as shown in lab studies and most dog food nowadays is full of gmo peas, corn, and soy. This food is more nutritionally dense therefore you will need to feed less than if you are feeding kibble such as Pro Plan or Life Abundance.
We switched our dogs to PawTree and are feeding the lamb, Salmon and Trout formulas. Yes, we are feeding all three. I love what Salmon does for their coats. The lamb has healthy fats and the Trout formula has barley which is a healthy grain. PawTree has a higher protein content than Pro Plan without GMOs, corn, soy and bi-product fillers. Our dogs are eating less of PawTree and maintaining a good weight.

One of the things that I LOVE about PawTree is that even if you order a 30# bag of kibble they are going to send you 3, 10# bags! I LOVE this. I don't want to lug around a 30# bag of food when I need to pull one in from the garage. In addition I can buy three different proteins which are going to give my dogs a variety of nutrients and we just mix them together.
PawTree is one stop shopping for most dog products that are used on a daily basis. Here are some quick links if you would like to check it out. Pawtree offers everything from kibble, freeze dried raw, training treats, probiotics and grooming supplies. Everything dog... They also have toys!

You do want to be careful of how much you feed. Our dogs need less kibble from PawTree than they do from ProPlan. Ruby was getting fat when we made the switch. My daughter's dog did the same. River actually put several pounds on before it was caught. So, if you make the switch know that you are going to want to feed a little less than you are now.
We actually just made a video to help show you how to figure out if your dog is at a good healthy weight. A lot of families are emailing in and asking how do I know how much food to feed? What I'm finding is that most people are way over feeding their pups! A growing puppy is going to need more kibble than an adult, de-sexed dog. As dog owners I feel it is our responsibility to be able to gauge the ever changing nutritional needs of our pups/dogs. Most of my adult Australian Labradoodles eat 1/3 cup twice a day. Some of my mediums will eat 1/2 cup twice a day. That's it. My adult Goldens usually eat 1 cup twice a day. While there will be times when a Golden Retriever puppy may eat 9 cups of food a day. As dog owners we have to be able to put our hands on our dogs and feel. Here is a short video to help guide you through this process. The nutritional needs of a pup from 8 weeks of age until 9 months can vary greatly from week to week. I'm hoping this video will help teach you how to know when your pup needs more or less food. A muscular, fit dog will live a longer, healthier life than an overweight dog. The leading cause of canine cancer is a dog being overweight. https://www.moonlitacres.com/dog-weights
